Physical Peer to Physical Peer

It’s called Dead Drops.

Hey guy, what the hell are you doing?

Oh.

‘Dead Drops’ is an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. I am ‘injecting’ USB flash drives into walls, buildings and curbs accessable to anybody in public space. You are invited to go to these places (so far 5 in NYC) to drop or find files on a dead drop. Plug your laptop to a wall, house or pole to share your files and date. Each dead drop contains a readme.txt file explaining the project.

Not So Boring Drill

Speaking of Minecraft, here’s some real mining craft, crafting mines.

Wikipedia fills us in on the Gotthard Base Tunnel:

After 64 percent of Swiss voters accepted the AlpTransit project in a 1992 referendum, construction of the tunnel began in 1996. Boring operations in the east tunnel were completed on 15 October 2010 in a cut-through ceremony broadcast live on Swiss TV. When it opens for traffic in late 2017, the tunnel will cut the 3.5-hour travel time from Zürich to Milan by an hour and from Zürich to Lugano to 1 hour 40 minutes.

The drill is much less epic when it’s spotless and removed from its natural setting.

(Also, this is only a scale model.)

Tech Support Comic

Would love to see “shibboleet” make it into the pantheon as a result of this comic.

Dare to dream.

Update: Chris Gaylord @ the Christian Science Monitor has a theory about shibboleet’s etymology.

Bicycle Reclamation of City Space

“Part design solution, part political statement, the concept was a finalist at the IIDA 2010 global design competition and aptly reflects this year’s competition theme of “Green Heart” – a call for using design as a marriage of sustainability and civic joy.”

John Lennon as an Old Man

Really fun piece of fiction here:

“Time for me mornin’ swim,” says Lennon, who has only just woken up. It is two p.m.

Lennon, who will turn 70 on October 9, remains enviably slim and has a deep late-summer tan. The longish hair is mostly white and a bit thinned out on top but becomingly so, in the manner of late-period Richard Harris. We stop at a crook in the creek where the waters slow and eddy, and where a stand of willows shades the bank scenically. Hung on a hook nailed to one of the trees is a handmade sign bearing the words “old mclennon’s swimmin hole.” Lennon hands me his cappuccino glass, drops his shorts, and Nestea-plunges backward into the water.

He re-emerges with a splash and a triumphant whoop, pushing his hair out of his face. Then he gently lowers himself back in, lying supine and semi-submerged, his penis bobbing upward, pointed right at me. “Alrighty then,” he says. “First question.”

I doubt seriously though that Lennon would’ve voted for Reagan.
